MARK E. FREITAS - President & Chief Executive Officer
As President and Chief Executive Officer of Mark Edward Partners, Mark E. Freitas leads the firm’s business strategy development and execution. Furthermore, he provides guidance to clients regarding their complex exposures and works closely with the insurance marketplace to develop products to mitigate those exposures.
Mr. Freitas’s career has spanned over 30 years, including 25 years at Frank Crystal & Company, a full-service national insurance brokerage firm that ranks among the top 20 insurance brokerage firms in the United States. Under his leadership as President & Chief Operating Officer, the company experienced an increase of over 300% in revenues from 2000 to 2007. This dramatic growth was a purely organic achievement, accomplished without acquisitions or assumption of debt.
Mr. Freitas joined Frank Crystal & Company in 1985 and subsequently formed the firm’s Financial Services unit. He was named Chief Operating Officer in 1999 and appointed President the following year. During his tenure at Frank Crystal & Company, Mr. Freitas developed and implemented an array of insurance products for various industry groups, most notably in the financial services community.
Mr. Freitas has provided expert testimony to the United States Department of Labor in Washington, DC on fiduciary liability insurance and bonding related to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974. He is a regular speaker at industry forums and is frequently cited in published articles. Mr. Freitas began his career in 1981 as an underwriter in the Bank Division of American International Group, where he went on to become manager of Financial Institution Products.
A graduate of the University of Connecticut, Mr. Freitas holds a Bachelor of Science from its School of Business. He has also completed various programs sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business. Working closely with his alma mater, Mr. Freitas is a director of the UConn Foundation, a member of the Leadership Cabinet of the School of Business, and an inductee in its School of Business Hall of Fame. He established the Mark E. Freitas Endowment Fund at the School of Business and the Mark E. Freitas Athletic Scholarship Fund. UConn’s Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum was dedicated and named in his honor in February 2005.
A dedicated philanthropist, Mr. Freitas established the Mark Edward Freitas Foundation in 2005 to advance a number of causes, especially those that support children and adolescents who are physically, intellectually, and financially challenged. In the past several years, the foundation has provided generous assistance to numerous educational, religious, and cultural institutions.
Mr. Freitas sits on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. Mr Freitas has been appointed to the board of The Palm Beach Police Foundation and, along with his wife Mary, serves as a Trustee of the Preservation Foundation of Palm Beach. Mr. Freitas served as a trustee of Sacred Heart University. In 2008, the University awarded him an honorary Doctorate for his exceptional record of success in business and in the larger community.
ANDREW P. GUERIN - Executive Vice President
Mr. Guerin is a 20-year industry veteran who has a proven track record of establishing multimillion-dollar business units at multinational brokerage firms. Mr. Guerin created two separate start-up merger and acquisition business units for both Willis and Lockton that are substantial revenue-producing operations for these organizations. Both business units grew to in excess of $25 million of annual recurring revenue within three to five years respectively. Mr. Guerin was a transaction expert in the private equity community and is considered one of the most experienced transactional professionals in the industry.
Recruited by Mr. Freitas in 2006, Mr. Guerin joined Frank Crystal & Company as a senior officer (Executive Managing Director). His responsibilities included growing its commercial insurance services business through the acquisition of large, complex middle market and risk management accounts, assisting with the resolution of complex client claims and aiding in the recruitment of senior talent to the company. Mr. Guerin and Mr. Freitas were constant collaborators on new business opportunities and strategies.
Furthermore, Mr. Guerin worked with all of the company’s business units and offices to set sales and marketing strategies for all new major business opportunities across the company. Under Mr. Guerin’s leadership, he upgraded all of the written communications related to client critiques, RFPs, and other client service deliverables that allowed the firm to better become a formidable competitor against the brokerage industry leaders.
Mr. Guerin has a strong record leading business development. Among his accomplishments, Mr. Guerin was instrumental in the firm obtaining the insurance programs for an NFL team and their stadium, a major action park owner and operator, one of the largest financial institutions in the world, as well as many high profile nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. Mr. Guerin’s expertise elevated the company’s hit ratio for new business opportunities by over 10%, to exceed a conversion rate of 95%.
Mr. Guerin has held various risk management positions at both Pall Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, and Lehman Brothers. A graduate of the University of Scranton, Mr. Guerin has a Bachelor of Science in Economics/Finance and is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter.
MARSHALL MANLEY - Partner
Marshall Manley has enjoyed a distinguished career as an internationally recognized lawyer and businessman.
Following his graduation from the Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan, Mr. Manley received his undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College and his law degree (Order of the Coif) from New York University where he was the recipient of the prestigious New York University Founders Day Award.
After distinguishing himself at NYU, Mr. Manley joined a law firm in California as an associate and, after only four years, was made a partner. He next joined the firm of Manatt, Phelps, Rothenberg, Manley & Tunney where he helped grow the firm from six to sixty lawyers in just six years.
His next move was as a founding partner of the California operations of the New York based Finley, Kumble, Wagner, Heine, Underberg & Manley where, in seven years, Manley built the California Offices from one attorney to 175. In addition, Manley became Chairman of the Management Committee and was significantly involved in building the firm into the largest law firm in the United States with offices in New York, Washington DC, California, Virginia, and London. The American Lawyer named Mr. Manley as “One of the 50 Most Promising Lawyers in the USA,” and later “One of the Most Powerful Lawyers in the USA.”
Among his diversified clients were Ronald Reagan, the exiled Shah of Iran, Columbia Pictures, Kaufman and Broad, Home Insurance Company, Motown, Rheem Manufacturing Co., World Color Press, Motel 6, Travelers Insurance Co. Ogden Corp. Edward Durell Stone, Wilma Rudolph, George Scharffenberger (trustee of President Regan's Blind Trust and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of USC and Georgetown) and numerous other individuals and entities.
Mr. Manley left the legal profession and entered into the business world when he became President and Chief Executive Officer of NYSE listed City Investing Company, a multi-national conglomerate (140th largest company in the USA at that time) with four hundred subsidiaries in fifty states and thirty-five countries. During Mr. Manley's tenure as CEO at City, the board of directors and shareholders elected to go through a voluntary tax free liquidation, which involved billions of dollars of asset sales, recapitalization, sales of companies, IPO's and spin-offs. The end result was the return to shareholders, in a tax free manner, of billions of dollars.
After the liquidation of City, Mr. Manley became President and CEO of The Home Group, later known as Ambase Corporation, a $16 billion dollar financial services company listed on the NYSE. Included in the numerous different financial services provided by Home Group were property and casualty insurance, life insurance, reinsurance, banking, stock brokerage, investment banking, insurance financing and real estate development.
Over the years, Mr. Manley has served as a board member or trustee on different corporate, charitable and civic boards including as Chairman of the Board of the Brooklyn College Foundation, Trustee of the American Museum of Natural History and the Hayden Planetarium, Chairman of the Board of the Wagner School for Public Administration at NYU, Chairman of the Business Committee of the New York Zoological Society, Member of the Board of the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum and the Board of Directors of the City Meals on Wheels.
Mr. Manley currently serves on several corporate as well as not-for-profit boards and as Commissioner of the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Commission.
In addition to the respect earned from the legal profession, Mr. Manley has received numerous awards for his outstanding contribution to business and to philanthropic causes; chief among them are the Horatio Alger Award for Distinguished Americans, the Jewish National Fund Tree of Life Award and an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters presented by the City University of New York.
